  1. This picture of an American Treefrog illustrates several points.
  2. The first is to ask permission.

  4. The frog was in a Vivarium in a local garden centre. I could see
  5. that it was well positioned but was behind poor quality and quite
  6. dirty glass. I approached an assistant and asked if the vivarium
  7. door could opened for a few seconds. He was interested in what I
  8. was doing, so the door was duly opened.

  12. Next is the difficulty of close up exposure. I had my Canon T90
  13. with it's dedicated 300TL flash, so knew that, with a relatively
  14. still subject I could use the spot metering flash mode for spot
  15. on exposure.

  17. It is a real pity more cameras were not fitted with this mode,
  18. and Canon have now dropped it !

  23. How much would be sharp ? I also had a Tamron SP90 macro lens
  24. fitted, so a close shot was going to be quite easy. Choosing a
  25. small aperture, which I knew the flash could easily supply enough
  26. power for, and focusing carefully on the face solved the
  27. sharpness problem.

  29. The result is a strong print which required some extra exposure
  30. round the edges to prevent there being light, distracting
  31. highlights. The picture has appeared in a photographic magazine
  32. illustrating an article on Ilford XP1 film.
